A report published this week has exposed a huge increase in deepfake scams and digital document fraud in the last 12 months.

For the first time, criminals are creating more digital forgeries than paper counterfeits – meaning that businesses need to pay more attention than ever to security and compliance when signing digital documents.

Findings in the Entrust 2025 Identity Fraud Report include:

  • Digital forgeries account for 57% of all document fraud – a 244% increase from 2023 and a 1,600% increase since 2021
  • Deepfake attacks occurred at a rate of one every five minutes in 2024
  • Fraud is becoming more sophisticated and more accessible via online networks

The report states: “To create digital forgeries, fraudsters are accessing document templates online or downloading images of documents obtained via a data breach and manipulating the details in Photoshop. GenAI tools are speeding up this process, helping fraudsters produce more of these digital synthetic identities – cheaply and at scale.”

Meanwhile, criminals are also using face-swap apps and voice-spoofing tools to create convincing deepfakes used to open fraudulent accounts, defeat biometric checks and trick people into handing over private information.

The report says: “AI-assisted tools have already had a sweeping impact across fraud. This is unlikely to change heading into 2025. Such tools will continue to increase both the volume and sophistication of fraud and other cybersecurity scams.”

Here at Videosign we saw the rise in digital fraud coming several years ago, and set about creating the best tool to keep identity fraud and forgery at bay.

Videosign users can verify identities using biometric checks against driving licences or passports, or by using banking credentials verified by OneID.

From there we can check for deepfakes using certified ‘liveness detection’ measures integrated into our software – confirming that the person you’re talking to is real by monitoring physiological or behavioural characteristics and confirming whether the face on screen is genuinely three-dimensional or just a two dimensional digital fake.

ID checks complete, it’s then time to sign your documents. The process is recorded on video, and the documents get the seal of authenticity with ‘eIDAS certified’ digital signatures meeting the highest European security standards.

Criminals are using more sophisticated techniques than ever to commit fraud.

That means you need access to the most secure tools to protect yourself and your clients.
